Covid Level 3 distance learning tasks

 Hello everyone.

With the breaking news tonight of our returning to Level 3 Covid, our Google Classroom page will once again become our main link to learning until we can once again attend school. At this stage we know that this will be our main access to set tasks for the remainder of Week 4.

Please watch your school emails to find out when our class Zoom Meetings will be, and for work that is being assigned. A writing task, and two maths activities have been added to the page alongside the independent maths tumble tasks that were added for this week's group sessions.

Alongside this huge family event we are fundraising through our Samosa Thursdays and Soup Wednesdays. Soup can be ordered on Wednesday mornings and Samosa's ordered on Thursday mornings at the desk beside the Auditorium and Office entrance before school.

Tae Kwon Do

We have started working on our flexibility and stamina. We may only be at lesson 1, but we have found that our Tae Kwon Do lessons have us constantly on the go.

Matariki Traditional Kite Making

It may look easy in the videos. It may even look amazing when Te Papa shows videos and samples of Traditional Matariki kites.
We persevered both in the making and test flying. A huge benefit to going traditional is everyone learnt how to tie knots, think outside the box, challenge themselves and to bind them with "harakeke string".  But best of all, our kites were totally recyclable.

Water game challenge

There may be a drought, so we have tried our best to conserve water.  Our relay challenge was to use cups to pass water between our players.

We also had a water
balance relay, trying to keep the cup upright and without spilling water on the back of our hands, from the start to the bucket on the finish line.

With the bad weather, we have even used our desks as barriers for bottle knock.  It took a while to get our eye in, but we started being able to throw the tennis balls with better accuracy to knock it over.

How big is a Cubit? - Old Style Measurement

In week 6 we continued looking into Measurement.  Long before the rulers that we have come to know with their mm, cm and m standard measurements came about, the Egyptians used their own standard measurements.
Cubits, Foot, Digit and Hand span lengths were used.  How did they standardise it?  They used the cubit, foot, digit and hand span of their Pharaoh.  Hopefully their Pharaoh didn't change too often.

We investigated the range of cubits, hand spans, feet and digits of our classmates.  Then we sorted them to find our most common length (mode), our median length, the range of lengths and the class averages for each of these measurements.

Level 2 Return to school

Shirley Serban, the Principal at Lake Brunner School (this school is on the lake front of Lake Brunner and has stunning views of the Southern Alps), has shared her video and song to help keep us safe as we return to school in Level 2.
A few good points we need to remember as we build our new Room 7 bubble.

MUST WE DO EVERY ACTIVITY THAT COMES THROUGH?

This post was added earlier

DISTANCE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS

at present as we feel our way through how distance and digital learning will go, there is no expectation that every activity be done. The goal is for all of you to feel linked with school and classmates, safe and supported with your families, and for all of us to get through this strange time.

You can do a mix of activities in our Google Classroom, on our flip grid, links on this Blog page, from your Home Learning kits, on the TV Home Learning programmes on both TVNZ 2+1 and TV 3 kids programmes, or even your own personal passion project - as long as you can show what you have been working on (a report, a google document or slide show, movie/video, photos, model ...

We will remember them - Anzac Day

New Zealand and Australia come together for their Remembrance Day, a day that helped forge them as nations that stood apart from Great Britain.  The April 25th is hugely important to our 2 countries, as it is the day we have chosen to remember those who have served in many wars that we have been involved in together.
Other countries have their own Remembrance Days,  selected for them through different dates that have gone down in history as being important or significant to them.

Worthy of their Sacrifice - Schools Spectacular 2013

As the Corona Virus still affects both countries, this will be a very different Remembrance day for our nations. No attending the Cenotaphs for the Dawn Services, no watching the light displays and films being broadcast across the walls of our National Museum at the Domain, no expeditions to Gallipoli or Passchendaele to see the battlefields.

This year will see a number of New Zealanders and Australians of all nationalities standing outside their homes, looking to the stars or the oncoming sunrise or the new day. A day when we remember the huge loss of life and injuries suffered by all sides affected by this and every war that has come after.

“The landing at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, and the fighting which took place on the peninsula will never be forgotten. They showed to the world the heroism of all those who shed their blood there. How heartrending for their nations were the losses that this struggle caused.” - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Zoom discussion guidelines

Hello wonderful Serens
From our first Zoom meeting it is timely to remember our class behaviour agreement, as this will allow us all to be part of the meetings and share in the discussions.
Here is a visual to help guide us.

be a respectful digital citizen

Remember our Be respectful, Be responsible and Be the Best you can be when making comments. If you wouldn't say it to Queen Lizzie or to Mrs Siohane, it doesn't get posted here.

Zoom Meeting Schedule survey

Please either go to our Google Class page or use this link to help us work out the best times for our whole class Zoom meetings.
You have a deadline of Friday at 3.15pm to make your choices.

Day 1 task for Maths

Just had a brief Zoom meeting with S and B. I have asked them to make 3 paper darts which need to be from the same size paper and same weight paper. Maybe you have some A4 paper or newspaper you could use? The 3 darts need to be different designs, so if you are allowed, google some origami/folded paper darts.  Here is one to start you off.

We had problems with our meeting, so I will be sending out another invitation to one about 1.30pm. See you then

Flipgrid and Google Classroom

https://info.flipgrid.com/

If you are having trouble getting into Flipgrid, perhaps use this link and try searching for our user id.

Also if you are having trouble getting into Google Classroom here is the link to their help page.  In your personal school gmail accounts there should also be an invitation, which should help you get in.  You will need to make sure that no other account is signed into your computer's google system while you do this.

Auckland Museum

As we start our Term 2 a great many organisations and places are sending through a Virtual Space to help us learn and explore.
The Auckland Museum is one of those groups, and it is quite timely, as their current exhibits fit alongside our new science topic.  As we discover our own backyards have a look at their details on insects and plants.
